Max Jamison

Max Leroy Jamison, of Claypool, passed away at 12:53 a.m. on Friday, April 21, 2023, at Parkview Regional Medical Center of Fort Wayne at the age of 85.

He was born on Sept. 10, 1937, in Warsaw, to Pansy Loverda (Reed) Jamison and Joseph Benton Jamison. In 1955 he graduated from Sidney High School in Sidney. Max enlisted in the U.S. Army in October 1960 and proudly served in Korea as a combat medic until his honorable discharge in October of 1962.

On June 5, 1965, he married the love of his life, Connie Elaine Bennett. They shared the joy of becoming parents, grandparents and even great-grandparents in the 55 years of marriage they were blessed to share with each other before Connie passed away on May 13, 2021.

Max was a lifetime resident of Kosciusko County and worked for Zimmer in Warsaw in Plant 5 as a supervisor for many years. Later he transitioned to working in assembly until the time of his retirement. He was a hardworking man his entire life and always took care of his family. Max enjoyed antique cars and collecting anything antique, and loved cars and railroad memorabilia. He will forever be remembered as a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother and friend to many.

He will be lovingly remembered by his daughter, Jodi (Alfredo) Lozano, Warsaw; and two sons, Dennis Jamison, Claypool, and Patrick (Angella) Jamison, Palestine. He also leaves behind his favorite four grandchildren, Valarie (Jeremy) Lozano, Syracuse, Cody Jamison, Burket, Aaron Jamison, Palestine, and Myra Jamison, Palestine; and three great-grandchildren, Alex, Charlotte and Rylan. Also surviving is his sister, Joan Perdue, Rochester. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Connie, in 2021; and his granddaughter, Shana, in 1984.

The Jamison family will celebrate Max’s life with a private memorial service at a later date. Arrangements were entrusted to Redpath-Fruth Funeral Home, 225 Argonne Road, Warsaw.

Janice Sue Allen Wood, 82, Claypool, died Sunday, May 7, 2023, at Peabody Health Care Center, North Manchester.

She was born April 19, 1941. On March 26, 1960, she married Eddie Wood, who survives.

She also is survived by her sons, Brian (Rhonda) Wood and Brent (Lori) Wood, both of Sidney; brother, Danny Joe Allen, North Manchester; sister, Saundra Hoagland, Warsaw; six grandsons; and two great-grandchildren.

Phillip Smith, also known as Mudd Bogg and Phil, passed away peacefully on Saturday May 6, 2023, in his childhood home where he had spent most of his life. He was surrounded by his loving family during his last moments. Phillip was born on March 24, 1963, in Goshen, to Phillip Smith Sr. and Laura (Brandon) Smith.

Phil graduated from Warsaw High School with the class of 1981 and later obtained his commercial driver’s license. He served more than two decades at R.R. Donnelley & Sons in materials handling and accomplished a lifelong goal spending some time as an over-the-road truck driver

Phil was a private person overall, but he showed great love for his family and loved being around them. He particularly loved spoiling his nephews Josh, Dustin, Brooks and Jared along with their seven great-nieces and great-nephews immensely. They were a huge part of family to him.

Phil’s love for Christmastime gift giving was legendary among those who knew him best. He had a big heart and always had a Mountain Dew in his back pocket. His passions revolved around mud bogs, tractor and truck pulls, demolition derbies and muscle cars. He attended the 4 Wheel Drive Jamboree in Indianapolis several times. Phil enjoyed listening to classic rock and old country music during his leisure time. He was also a skilled artist.

Phillip is survived by mother, Laura Smith, of Warsaw; siblings, Bambi Hyde, of Warsaw, and Chauncey (Aleta) Smith, of Pierceton; nephews, Josh Hyde, of Warsaw, Dustin (Carla) Baker, of Pierceton, Brooks (Tyler) Smith, of Warsaw, and Jared (Taylor) Smith, of Pierceton; uncle, Steve Smith, of Claypool; aunts, Sallie Brandon, of Columbus, Miss., Brenda Brandon, of Etna Green, Carol Brandon, of Warsaw, and Erma Brandon, of Warsaw. In addition, he is survived by seven great-nieces and great-nephews who he truly adored.

Titus Funeral Home of Warsaw, 2000 Sheridan St., is entrusted with care of the Smith family. Visitors may gather with the family from 9:30-11:30 a.m. Friday, May 12. A Life Celebration Funeral will begin at 11:30 a.m., officiated by family member Dudley Wates. Final interment will take place in Oakwood Cemetery.

Phillip will be dearly missed by all who knew him best. He will be remembered for his big heart, his passion for life and the joy he brought to those around him. In lieu of flowers, gifts may be given to K21 Health Foundation’s Cancer Care Fund, with envelopes available at the funeral home.

Floyd Rex Nifong, 95, Plymouth, died at 8:58 p.m. Sunday, May 14, 2023, at home.

He was born March 10, 1928. On Sept. 7, 1952, he married Ruth Schaetzle, who survives.

He also is survived by five children, Connie Sue Dodson, Warsaw, John (Carol) Wagoner, North Webster, Lou Ann (Jim) Doll, Plymouth, Mark (Lisa) Nifong, Claypool, and David Nifong, Plymouth; 11 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; 12 great-great-grandchildren; and a sister, Lorna Cooksey, LaPorte.

She was born June 27, 1944. On Oct. 25, 1964, she married Don Walther, who survives.

Gregg Allen “Stubby” Brown, Sidney, died Monday, May 29, 2023, at Lutheran Hospital of Indiana, Fort Wayne.

He was born Feb. 11, 1951. On June 2, 1973, he married Debbie Peterson, who survives.

John Ivan Schuler, of Grace Village Retirement Community, Winona Lake, passed away at 6:25 p.m. on Monday, May 29, 2023, at Stillwater Hospice in Fort Wayne at the age of 88.

Ivan was born on Feb. 16, 1935, in New Vienna, Ohio, to Nancy (Cast) Schuler and John Ivan Schuler Sr. He married Carol Ann Davis on July 25, 1958, and they shared 58 years of marriage before she passed away on Dec. 17, 2016. Ivan was blessed to have met someone new to share his life and married Diana Marie (Miller) Kehler on Nov. 15, 2018; she survives.

Ivan graduated from Banning High School in Wilmington, Calif., in 1954. On Oct. 11, 1954, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and proudly served until his honorable discharge in 1956. After his service he earned his bachelor’s degree in science and physical education from California State in Long Beach, Calif., and later received his master’s degree in education. Ivan taught and coached at Biola University in California for many years and in 1977 moved his family to Winona Lake, where he served as the athletic director for Grace College for a number of years. He always enjoyed teaching and also taught at Tippecanoe Valley High School in Akron.

He loved the fellowship of his church family at Winona Lake Grace Brethren Church, was a member of North Webster American Legion Post 253, a longtime member of the Morning Optimist Club and a Grace College Lancer Hall of Fame Member. Ivan loved his family and will be dearly missed by those who loved him.

He will be lovingly remembered by his wife, Diana Marie Schuler, Winona Lake; three daughters, Laurie (Jim) Rogers, Winona Lake, Holly (Roy) Angle, Dublin, Ireland, and Jennifer (Scott) Van Cleave, Claypool. Also surviving are 11 grandchildren, Thad, Jake, Jordan, Mallory, Stan, Ivan, Lauren, Jade, Ellis, Kolman and Avery; eight great-grandchildren, Veyda, Alek, Isaac, Malachi, Aaron, Keoni, Jaxon and Maesie; and a sister, Dolores Columbus, California. He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Carol; and two brothers, Dave and Jim Schuler.

Ivan’s life will be celebrated at noon on Friday, June 2, at Winona Lake Grace Brethren Church, 1200 Kings Highway, Winona Lake, and officiated by Pastor Bruce Barlow. Friends and family may visit prior to the service from 10 a.m. until noon at the church.

A graveside service will follow at Oakwood Cemetery of Warsaw with military rites conducted by members of the American Legion Post 253 of North Webster and active-duty members of the Navy Honor Guard. Arrangements were entrusted to Redpath-Fruth Funeral Home, 225 Argonne Road, Warsaw.

Memorial donations may be directed to Grace College, 1 Lancer Way, Winona Lake, IN 46590 and designated to the Athletic Department.

Robert “Bob” Courtney Sr., 77, Claypool, formerly of Wabash, died at 3:40 p.m. Tuesday, May 30, 2023, at home.

He was born Jan. 22, 1946. On July 5, 1969, he married Allene Phillips, who preceded him in death in 2004. On Sept. 1, 2012, he married Alecia Schlemmer, who survives.

He also is survived by six sons, Robert (Kendra) Courtney, Pierceton, Jeff Courtney, Pierceton, Gale (Sherry) Courtney, Roann, Gary (Stephanie) Courtney, Acworth, Ga., John Walls, Warsaw, and JR (Karla) Banninger, Twin Peaks, Calif.; one stepdaughter, Amber (Mike) Bean, Peru; six grandchildren; one great-grandchild; one sister, Donna Steele; and one sister-in-law, Judy Courtney.

Fred Thomas Kinch

Fred Thomas Kinch, 81, Claypool, passed away on Saturday, June 24, 2023, at Timbercrest Healthcare Center in North Manchester.

Born in Warsaw on Valentine’s Day in 1942, Fred was the son of the late Nicholas Martin and Ann Alberta (Rutledge) Kinch.

Fred went to farrier school in Macomb, Ill., and he shoed horses throughout his life. He also installed floors in silos at Tri-State Harvester, worked at W&W Truck Sales, started his own business selling semis and eventually retired from Par-Kan Co., where he was employed in sales. After retiring, Fred and his son started Horseshoe Hill Leather, Inc.

On July 9, 1967, Fred married the love of his life, Susan Parker. The two were wed at Spring Creek Church where they both attended before its closing. They were blessed with two children, Joseph and Belinda, and two grandchildren, Riley and Addison.

While their children were young, Fred and Susan began their own business together frying fish, Jonah Style. Throughout Fred’s many adventures, his love for his family remained steadfast, and he always supported his children in their various activities. From livestock to baseball, Fred always wanted to help his kids be successful and happy.

A jokester at heart, Fred had the uncanny ability to tell stories and make people laugh. He delighted in time spent outside, whether it was gardening, shoeing horses or working around his property. He took fishing trips to Canada with his friends and went snowmobiling with his family.

When Fred was inside, he enjoyed watching old westerns and playing euchre with family and friends. Fred was also proud of his membership in the Masonic lodge.

The loving memory of Fred Thomas Kinch will be forever cherished by his wife of nearly 56 years, Susan Kinch, Claypool; son Joseph (Karen Royer) Kinch, Claypool; daughter Belinda (Gary) Shepherd, Owasso, Okla.; grandchildren Riley Thomas Shepherd and Addison Nicole Shepherd; and brother Louis Gene (Shirley) Kinch, North Manchester.

Fred was preceded in death by his parents; and brothers Joseph C. Farrara, Anthony L. Farrara and John E. Kinch.

Family and friends may call 3-7 p.m. Tuesday, June 27, 2023, at McKee Mortuary, 1401 SR 114 West, North Manchester. A Masonic service will begin at 7 p.m. His funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, June 28, 2023, with calling beginning one hour prior. Clem Metzger will officiate. Burial will be held at Spring Creek Cemetery, 8220 S. 700E, Pierceton.

John A. “Hippie” Simpson, 75, died at 3:39 a.m. Saturday, June 24, 2023, at Stillwater Hospice, Fort Wayne.

He was born Aug. 28, 1947.

Pastor James ‘Jim’ Baughman — UPDATED

Pastor James “Jim” Baughman, a devoted servant of the Lord, passed away on Sunday, July 9, 2023, at his residence in Pierceton. He was born Dec. 11, 1968, in Pikeville, Ky., to John and Jean (Lee) Baughman. Pastor Jim was known for his unwavering faith, selfless dedication to his community and love for his family.

Jim graduated from East High School in 1985. After high school he went on to earn his master’s in pastoral studies at Faith Baptist Bible College in Iowa where he met his wife, Elaine Feenstra. The two were married on May 16, 1992.

Pastor Jim embarked on his ministry journey in 1993. He has served as the pastor of Bethel Baptist Church in Pierceton since 2003.

Throughout his career as a pastor, he touched countless lives with his compassionate nature and genuine care for others. Pastor Jim had an infectious enthusiasm that endeared him to the congregation and made him beloved by all. He possessed an indomitable spirit and an unwavering commitment to the teachings and principles of the Christian faith.

Outside of his pastoral duties, Pastor Jim was well-known for his love of outdoor activities and sports. He possessed the heart of a child and could often be found participating in various outdoor adventures. He particularly cherished spending quality time with his beloved wife, Elaine, their children and grandchildren. His mechanical prowess was renowned among those who knew him — there was hardly anything he couldn’t fix.

A pillar of strength within the Pierceton community, Pastor Jim also served as an active firefighter with the Pierceton Volunteer Fire Department. His commitment to public service extended beyond the walls of the church as he dedicated himself to ensuring the safety and well-being of others in the community.

In addition to serving as a spiritual leader and firefighter, Pastor Jim excelled in various hobbies and interests. Hunting and fishing provided him solace amidst nature’s beauty while carpentry and construction allowed him to showcase his remarkable craftsmanship. Additionally, he found joy in umpiring at the local baseball diamonds and coaching the youth in their baseball endeavors.

Pastor James Baughman will be dearly missed by his surviving family and friends. He is survived by his loving wife, Elaine Baughman, who shared his life’s joys. He leaves behind cherished memories for his children, Josh (Anne) Baughman, of Pierceton, Christa Baughman, of Columbia City, Zachariah (Mary) Baughman, of Claypool, and Stephanie Baughman, of Pierceton. His legacy continues through his four adored grandchildren, Clay, Alivia, Amara and Josiah. In addition, he is survived by his parents, John and Jean Baughman, of Pierceton; and three siblings, Jane (Timothy) Silcott, of Arizona, Jeffery (Sanae) Baughman, of California, and Jerry (Roz) Baughman, of Ohio, and their families.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, an infant child, and an infant grandchild. His parents, John and Jean Baughman, of Pierceton, mourn the loss of their beloved son.

Pastor Jim’s spirit will forever live on as a beacon of hope within the hearts of those he touched. He will be remembered for his unwavering faith in God and his profound impact on the lives he encountered. Pastor Jim’s legacy serves as an enduring reminder to love unconditionally, serve selflessly and always strive to make a positive difference in the world.

Arrangements are entrusted to Titus Funeral Home & Cremation Services of Warsaw. Family members, friends and community members are invited to attend the visitation service to pay their respects Friday, July 14. The visitation will take place from 2-7 p.m. at Pierceton Elementary School, located at 434 S. First St., Pierceton.

A Life Celebration® to honor the life of Pastor Jim will be held on Saturday, July 15. The service will commence at 10:30 a.m. at Pierceton Elementary School. Following the service, he will be laid to rest at Hillcrest Cemetery in Pierceton.

Daniel Joseph Conley went to be with our Lord on Tuesday, May 23, 2023, in the home he shared with his son, Joe Taylor, daughter-in-law, Shelley, and grandchildren, Aiden, Devin and Olyvia, in Bella Vista, Ark.

Dan was born in Warsaw, Indiana, on Sept. 8, 1947, to Bert and Frances Conley, who preceded him in death.

He was a 1966 graduate of Claypool High School in Claypool.

Along with being a longtime employee of Zimmer, he volunteered for years at the Cardinal Center and worked with the Special Olympics organization.

Dan served in the U.S. Army’s 101st Airborne in the Artillery Division and served in Vietnam from 1967-1969.

Dan is survived by his son, Joe, and family; daughter, Amy Buchs, and granddaughter, Madison, of Fort Wayne; a grandson, Tristan Burris, of Fort Wayne; and a granddaughter, Shelby Minix, of Salyersville, Ky.

He is also survived by four brothers, Reuben, John and Robert, all of Warsaw, and Mark, of Columbus, Ga.

He is survived by two sisters, Joan, of Burlington, Wash., and Deb, of Warsaw.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Danielle Minix; six brothers, Ernest, Herman, Woodford, Bobby, Roger and Ron; and three sisters, Wilma Jane, Gerry and Nita.

Per his request, he was cremated and no memorial service will be held.

David Cloice Munson, of Claypool, went home to be with his Lord and Savior at 10:44 p.m. Monday, July 24, 2023, at the age of 77. He passed away peacefully in his home surrounded by many of his loved ones.

He was born on Feb. 12, 1946, in Warsaw, to Dorothy Helen (Holderman) Munson and Harry Arthur Munson. David was a lifetime resident of Kosciusko County, where he was a 1964 graduate of Claypool High School. At the young age of 20, David married Margaret Elaine Walters on March 11, 1966. They were blessed with 57 years of marriage and countless memories.

David farmed the Munson Home Place, where he was raised, until his passing. A farmer to the core, with patience, hope, discipline and a strong work ethic, he farmed his family’s land and lovingly cultivated the crops all season long. He always strived to provide the best for his family, and with God’s grace he did. While farming he also worked for a number of years at Endicott Church Furniture, Uniroyal and DePuy in Warsaw. David was a hardworking man who found time to enjoy the simple things in life such as fishing and camping. He dearly loved being with his family, especially time spent with his grandchildren. His most important involvement was his church activities as a member of Calvary Tabernacle Church in Winona Lake. David enjoyed spreading the Word, teaching Sunday school and, of course, sharing his talents on his guitar with the congregation. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and a friend to many. He would most want to be remembered for his faith in his Savior Jesus Christ and will be dearly missed by all who loved him.

He will be lovingly remembered by his wife, Margaret Munson, Claypool; two daughters, Cheryl (Jeffrey L.) Thompson, Claypool, and Amy (Eric) Pfeiffer, Claypool; three grandchildren, Brittney (Ryan) Hessler, Bourbon, Bryan (Morgan) Thompson, Rossville, and Breanna Thompson, Claypool; and four great-grandchildren, Adaline, Easton, Hazel and Sawyer. Also surviving is his brother, Max Munson, Warsaw; sister, Arlene Ryan, Syracuse; and two sisters-in-law, Elaine Munson and Phyllis Munson, both of Warsaw. He was preceded in death by his parents; beloved daughter, Rhonda Sue Munson in 1976; and two brothers, Doyle L. Munson in 2019 and Loren Munson in 2020.

Friends and family may visit from 4-7 p.m. Thursday, July 27, at Calvary Tabernacle Church, 1300 Wooster Road, Winona Lake. David’s life will be celebrated with a service at 10 a.m. Friday, July 28, at Calvary Tabernacle Church and officiated by Pastor Brie Lycan. A graveside service will follow at Pleasant Grove Cemetery in Warsaw. Arrangements were entrusted to Redpath-Fruth Funeral Home, 225 Argonne Road, Warsaw.
